G-Shock Releases Its Reddest, Hottest Watch Yet

Since its inception 37 years ago, G-Shock was introduced as the big and brawny younger brother of Casio. It still is. Each watch is specially designed to withstand mechanical stress. Throw it at a wall, and it'll survive. Get all your mates to stamp on it in turn like you're in a zone two version of The Lord of the Flies, and it'll probably survive that too given the fact G-Shock broke a Guinness World Record when a watch kept on ticking after a hit and run with a 24 tonne truck. G-Shock has always been a technically robust watch. But where it once went subtle in dark, pseudo-military colourways, the offshoot is now showing off a bit – and we're thrilled.

The latest G-Shock Full Metal 5000 (ref. GMW-B5000RD-4JF) is available in a shiny, shiny red finish, with a matching ring to the outer dial. Which sounds a bit flash. But, in practice, the digital watch works very well. One: because it's a loose tie-in to menswear's current appetite for futuristic, Anime-like design (think Prada's bulky, Blade Runner trainers and the technicolour beamcoats of MSGM S/S '21). And two: because maximalism is alive and well, and watches, by sheer token of their sidearms slot in an outfit, provide a safer, smaller space to enjoy such volume.

Inside, the Full Metal 5000 enjoys a solar-charged function that allows for 10 hours of juice. That powers all the usual features you'd expect from G-Shock with a few added extras like full Bluetooth connectivity for smartphone optimisation.

You'll have to hold tight for full release details (it's expected to go on sale at some point this month, exact date TBC), but also for shipping. The Full Metal 5000 will be available exclusively in Japan for around £500 at conversion, with extra for delivery. It'll be worth the wait though – and it'll absolutely survive the journey too.
