Feeling The Fresher Fear? Tips That Every New Student Should Know

So results day has passed and by now you’re probably getting over your first celebratory hangover but that’s fine, you’ll have more to come I’m sure!

Now going to university may seem like a whole other world and if I’m honest, it is but besides the stress that comes with all education (I mean, come on, it’s not like college was a breeze), it’s one of the best things you could do!

Let’s get started with it, shall we? Here are ten tips for uni that people might forget to tell you!

Freshers Flu Is Real

Stock up on medicine because usually during Freshers Week you will get ill, make sure you’ve got some paracetamol or lemsips or whatever you use to make you feel better cos there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’ve got the plague before your first lessons.

Sync Your Uni Emails To Your Phone/Laptop

You might think that this would be common sense but you’d be surprised the amount of times you’ll hear someone go “What email?!”, true not all those emails are gonna be important but you’ll wanna know what’s going on when they are!

Comfy Clothes Are Your Friend

It’s up to you how you dress but when you’re tired, got however many assignments and have probably done an all nighter cos you forgot a piece of work then a messy bun and sweatpants are gonna be a go-to look and you’ll rock it with pride.

Supernoodles Are Not A Way To Live

Guys come on. We all like noodles from time to time but living on them is not the way forward and you’ll start to feel crap after a bit - make a list and budget your money for a good food shop. Everyone goes crazy with their student loan and hey you deserve some new stuff but don’t waste it all and then wonder why you gotta live off Aldi noodles, budget, budget, budget!

Get Kitted Out

Sometimes your course will send you a list of stuff you’ll ‘need’ and sometimes they won’t but you pretty much have an idea of the essentials you’ll need for your classes -pens, notepads etc. Have everything ready before you go and you’ll not have to rush or rummage to find a pen at the bottom of your bag.

Know Where You’ll Be

Chances are you’re gonna get lost, your lecturers might expect that at first but use your timetable and go exploring. Check out where your lessons are and go find them before you actually start, you’ll be more thankful of not walking in late.

Google Harvard Referencing

You’ll need this and you’ll use this. You can usually find out how to do in a leaflet in the library, your lecturers or online but knowing what it is and how to do it will save you ages trying to do references at the end of an essay.

Take Breaks

This might seem pretty obvious but if you’re stressed and just wanna get your work done, it’s easy enough to forget to take a break but you’ll work ten times better if you actually take a few breaks in between.

You Don’t Need A Mac

I don’t actually know where this theory came from that you need a MacBook, and I even got asked this by some upcoming students but no, you don’t need a Mac. I’m a huge fan of Apple and you probably will have the chance to use them in university but as long as you can use the internet, Microsoft Word and Adobe (if you need it), any laptop is completely fine.

Don’t Forget That Uni Has WiFi

If you don’t get a lot of data on your phone, this could be a lifesaver. Ask for the uni wifi and you should connect up every time you’re there - saves your data, saves you money and it means you can work on your laptop there if you work better in a ‘classroom’ environment… plus it means you can tweet, Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram about how happy you are to be at uni.
