French director Jacques Audiard's film 'Emilia Pérez' leads Oscar nominations
"Emilia Pérez", a transgender cartel musical made by French director Jacques Audiard, topped this year's Oscar nominations, earning 13 nods in an announcement on Thursday. It was followed by the epic immigrant saga "The Brutalist," and show-stopping musical adaptation "Wicked", with 10 nominations each.
Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish language, French-made film, dominated the Academy Awards nominations with a leading 13 picks, including best picture and best actress for Karla Sophia Gascon, making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar.
The story of a Mexican drug lord who transitions to a woman and starts a new life, “Emilia Pérez" had its world premiere in May 2024, when it competed for the Palme d'Or and won the Jury Prize and Best Actress award for Gascon at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Emilia Pérez" was followed by epic immigrant saga "The Brutalist," and show-stopping musical adaptation "Wicked," which picked up 10 nominations each.
“The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet's postwar epic filmed in VistaVision, snagged nominations for best picture, best director, as well as nominations for actor Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones.
Jon M. Chu’s lavish “Wizard of Oz” riff scored 10 nominations, including best picture and acting nods for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
"A Complete Unknown," starring Timothee Chalamet as a young Bob Dylan, earned nominations for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor and supporting actress.
