Shay Given believes Manchester City were ‘a bit lacklustre’ as Rodri’s late goal gave them a narrow 2-1 win at Sheffield United.

In the absence of manager Pep Guardiola as he recovers from back surgery, City endured a frustrating opening 45 minutes as they wasted a golden opportunity to take a narrow lead into half-time.

A questionable handball by Blades defender John Egan led to a penalty nine minutes before the interval but the usually reliable Erling Haaland could only hit the inside of the post with his effort from 12 yards. However, the Norway international made amends just after the hour-mark when he finally broke the deadlock with a well-taken header from close range. A Kyle Walker error allowed the hosts back into the game in the closing stages as Jayden Bogle fired home but Rodri would have the last laugh as the City midfielder’s stunning strike gave his side all three points.

Former City keeper Given believes the hosts’ downfall came from ‘losing their heads’ in the aftermath of their equaliser - but was left somewhat underwhelmed by the performance from his old club.

He told Sky Sports: “It just seemed a bit lacklustre from Manchester City.

“I think they thought it was going to be an easy game, get the job done, one-nil and get back up the road. Kyle Walker made a mistake and Sheffield United are back in it. There’s a real lift around the stadium and a real lift on the park as well.

“It felt for a few minutes as if Sheffield United lost their heads a little bit and their discipline and Rodri comes up with a brilliant winning goal. It’s a mistake from Walker for the goal but Larouci should clear his lines on the line and Foden gets the assist. He’s probably had a heavy touch for the first time in his career but it’s a brilliant strike from Rodri.”

City are back in Premier League action next Saturday afternoon when Fulham visit the Etihad Stadium.
