Florida’s Orlando Melbourne airport sued by other Orlando airport over 'misleading' name

Florida’s Orlando Melbourne airport sued by other Orlando airport over 'misleading' name

Orlando Melbourne airport in Florida is being sued over its name.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) has filed a suit to force the airport to remove “Orlando” from its title.

The airport is located in Melbourne, 70 miles away from Orlando, and the GOAA is claiming that its name makes it seem like the airport is “located in or is closer to Orlando and Orlando area attractions than it actually is.”

In addition, the suit requests that the airport post notices to set the record straight, addressing “false and misleading statements” about its proximity to Orlando.

“The illegal advertisements are intended to cause consumers to stop booking airline flights to GOAA’s Orlando International Airport, and opt instead to mistakenly fly to Melbourne International Airport,” reads the lawsuit, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Part of the problem lies in the competition with Orlando International Airport, which is actually located in Orlando.

However, while Orlando International Airport sees 47 million passengers pass through each year, Orlando Melbourne airport welcomes fewer than a million people.

Whether or not its title is misleading, Orlando Melbourne airport still boasts the accolade of being one of the most beautiful airports to land at in the world, according to PrivateFly's 2019 survey.

It’s not the first airport to come under fire for a less than accurate name.
