Florence Welch will score a new musical based on The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald.

The musician will write the lyrics with her band Florence + the Machine, while Academy Award nominee Thomas Bartlett will take on songwriting.

“Musicals were my first love,” says Welch, “and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism.

“This book has haunted me for a large part of my life. It contains some of my favourite lines in literature."

She added: “It is an honour to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in a song.”

The upcoming musical will debut in New York, with dates are yet to be announced.

We can expect many more interpretations of the classic 1925 novel The Great Gatsby to come, as its copyright ran out on 1 January 2021, reports the BBC. Prior to that date, unauthorised reproduction, distribution, display, and creation of derivative works would not have been allowed under copyright law.

The upcoming musical isn't the first time Welch has worked on something Gatsby-related; Florence + the Machine previously performed 'Over the Love' for Baz Luhrmann's 2013 adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.
