Hotel safes can be convenient when travelling - until you forget to gather your belongings before checking out, that is.

It's easy to overlook when you're taking one last look around your hotel room to make sure you've got everything, ending up at the airport without your passport.

To ensure that you always remember to grab the most important item for travel before heading to the airport, your passport, a flight attendant for British Airways has shared her technique to make sure she never forgets.

According to Ty Opoku Adjei, you won't leave without your passport if you place something you couldn’t actually leave without alongside your passport - such as one of your shoes.

“When we go on holiday, it’s natural to want to keep your valuables in the hotel room safe, but some people make it all the way to the airport only to realise they’ve left their passport there,” Adjei told Business Insider. “My top tip is to keep one of your shoes you plan to wear on your journey home in the safe.

“If you do this, you’ll never leave the hotel room without checking the safe ever again.”

The travel hack is good news for Britons, as one survey found that one in 10 admit to forgetting their passports.

Another survey by Choice Hotels Canada found toothbrushes are the personal item most often forgotten.

Phone chargers are second on the list of lost items, with 15 per cent forgetting to pack them, followed by sunglasses, books and hats.

Apart from placing a shoe with your important items, having a checklist to run down before you exit your room can also save you the hassle of looking for your missing headphones or passport when you get to the airport.
