Despite his extensive experience with stitching up livestock, it seems as though Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter would not have been able to help speed up repairs to Erik Gudbranson’s face after all.

In the Flames’ 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on March 19, Gudbranson spent 33 minutes in the trainer’s room getting stitches after he received a high-stick to the face.

After the game, head coach Darryl Sutter told reporters he wasn’t happy that it took so long to get his defenceman back on the ice.

“I could have done it in five minutes,” he said. “Sewed horses and cows up in 10 minutes.”

It turns out Gudbranson’s injury was more complex than a simple cut on the lip.

On Thursday, the 30-year-old told the media that it was a split tongue he suffered during the game as a result of him biting his tongue after being high-sticked. Treating the wound required freezing prior to stitching, which was why his absence was prolonged.

“I took a high stick and bit my tongue,” he told reporters. “Don’t do that. It sucks”

Gudbranson also added that he wasn’t crazy with the idea of his coach stitching him up like a cow.

Sutter famously retreats to his hometown of Viking, Alta., in the offseason, where he tends to his family’s 3,000-acre farm, principally raising cattle.
