October 2020 was supposed to see the re-launch of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Accra, which would feature shows and presentations from the most prestigious fashion talent in Ghana. But, as with most planned events this year, the fashion week was forced to be postponed due to the global pandemic, with shows returning instead in 2021.
The organisation was still keen to celebrate Ghanian fashion though as part of its efforts to support global fashion talent and spotlight emerging designers. So, in lieu of shows, Mercedes-Benz worked with a local team in Accra, including photographer Carlos Idun-Tawiah, to create a powerful photographic campaign which highlights the design talent the country has to offer, shooting the beautiful collections on the vibrant streets of the capital.
"Aspirational design is at the heart of the Mercedes-Benz brand, and our commitment to supporting global talent who push creative conversation forward is more important than ever," said Bettina Fetzer, vice president of marketing at Mercedes-Benz. " The level of talent in Ghana is truly inspiring and we are excited to kick-start planning to re-launch Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Accra, when it is safe to do so."
The concept of the shoot centred around how, historically in Ghana, skills and lessons are transferred through the generations, allowing for plenty of opportunity for collaboration between designers and other creatives of every age. Idun-Tawiah shot the work of Larry Jay, Steve French, Hazza, Atto Tetteh and Chloe Asaam, where each designer had the opportunity to tell their story of how intergenerational collaboration has informed their creative practice.
