The First Trailer for Netflix's 'Britney v Spears' Is Here. Will the Doc Do Her Story Justice?
The saga of Britney Spears's conservatorship has gone on for nearly a decade, evolving from tabloid fodder to a troubling court case that could change the state of conservatorships as we know them. On 29 September, Spears will have her most important day in court yet, with a potential end to the conservatorship on the docket. The day before, Netflix will release its new documentary, Britney v Spears, chronicling the long journey from 2008 to present day.
The documentary, which has been kept under wraps and has been in production for over a year, questions the legitimacy of Spears's conservatorship and the inner-workings of the arrangement that has baffled entertainment reporters and experts over the past several years. As the title suggests, the documentary points a damning light at Jamie Spears, Britney's father and primary conservator. As Variety reports, the film boasts legal experts, a handful of talking heads close to Spears herself, and never-before-seen legal documents that were leaked to filmmakers.
The trailer, released on Wednesday, features a voiceover from Spears herself, taken from the bombshell summer testimony that confirmed after all these years that Spears actively wants out of the conservatorship that she was placed in circa 2008.
This is not the first time a documentary about Spears's legal battle has been produced. Earlier this year, Hulu released Framing Britney Spears in conjunction with The New York Times. The film followed Spears's conservatorship back to its origins, pointing out the pitfalls of Spears's family, as well as select stars and media personalities who were associated with Spears's very public mental health crisis in the late 2000s. In a since deleted post on Instagram, Spears skewered the film, pointing out that it was embarrassing to her and painted her in the wrong light.
There is no confirmation currently as to whether Spears or those involved in the conservatorship are attached to the Netflix documentary.
