The first trailer has been released for a documentary following Eliud Kipchoge’s historic sub-two hour marathon in 2019.
Sharing the trailer on social media, Kipchoge said: ‘Join me on my journey as I prepared to make history by running a marathon under two hours. I hope by watching this film you will also feel inspired to run. Coming this summer!’
Kipchoge: The Last Milestone, which is being produced by Alien and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott’s production company, will be released digitally on August 23. It will offer ‘unprecedented access to Eliud… ahead of his attempt to achieve the seemingly impossible,’ a statement from Ridley Scott Creative Group said.
Kipchoge became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna in 2019. He finished in 1:59:40, running a sub-4:34 pace for all 26.2 miles. However, it did not count as an official world record as standard rules around fluids and pacing weren’t followed.
The documentary will reportedly also offer viewers a more personal side to the athlete, including ‘footage from his home in Kenya, interviews with those closest to him, details of the daily rituals of his life and the dynamics within his team and community,’ the statement said.
In the trailer, Kipchoge says in a voiceover: ‘In the journey of life, there is ups and downs. In marathon there is a lot of challenges, ups and downs. There is pain in training, pain in running, and joy at the end of the marathon.’
Later he adds: ‘It is not about the colour, or where you are born… We wanted to make history and inspire the human family.’
Kipchoge's next major marathon will be at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, having received a Covid-19 vaccination in Kenya ahead of the Games.
