Sumptuous period drama Sanditon will be bringing Regency England back to life for the anticipated second season when it returns to ITV and BritBox in March next year. The popular period drama will drop on 21 March 2022 here in the UK, launching first on BritBox before airing on ITV.

The acclaimed series is based on Jane Austen's unfinished last novel of the same name, and follows our impulsive and intrepid protagonist Charlotte (Rose Williams), as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon to pursue love and adventure.

Fans can look forward to new romances, friendships and challenges for the residents as the Army make Sanditon their new base.

More first look photos have just been released, showing new cast members, including Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), who is described as "thoughtful, cerebral, and antisocial to the point of reclusiveness".

We'll also meet plenty of military men, led by the dashing Colonel Francis Lennox (Tom Weston-Jones), who quickly sets his sights on wooing a particular young lady. Plus, Captain Declan Fraser (Frank Blake) and Captain William Carter (Maxim Ays), who both strike up an acquaintance with Charlotte’s younger sister, Alison Heywood (Rosie Graham).

Previous first look images of the new series were released back in October, showing Charlotte dancing with a mystery man and taking on the role of governess to Augusta Wilson (Eloise Webb), Alexander Colbourne's ward and niece.

Here's everything else we know about Sanditon season 2 so far...

Sanditon season 2: The plot

ITV has revealed we can expect romance for our heroine Charlotte and her best friend Georgiana (Crystal Clarke).

The period drama will return to Sanditon nine months after heartbreaking finale, which featured Charlotte being rejected by her love-interest Sidney (Theo James). This time, however, Charlotte will be attracting the attention of two new suitors.

"Charlotte returns to the beautiful seaside town and soon attracts the attention of not one, but two new men. And, in her last summer season before turning 21, Georgiana Lambe, keen to forge her own identity, gets up to mischief in the name of love… but will she run the risk of being lonelier than ever before?" the synopsis reads.

Meanwhile, "in Georgiana Lambe's (Crystal Clarke) last summer season before turning 21, she is keen to forge her own identity, gets up to mischief in the name of love… But will she run the risk of being lonelier than ever before? The Army also arrives to make Sanditon their new base and with them bring potential new romances, friendships and challenges for the residents."

The Parkers are back, as Tom Parker (Kris Marshall) strives to rebuild Sanditon. But there are many unforeseen issues awaiting him, while the secrets and lies of the dysfunctional Denhams continue to rock the foundations of the sunny seaside town.

Sanditon season two: The cast

Rose Williams will be back as our lead, Charlotte, and Crystal Clarke will be back as her loyal friend, Georgiana Lambe. Original cast members also include Kris Marshall (Tom Parker), Anne Reid (Lady Denham), Turlough Convery (Arthur Parker), Jack Fox (Sir Edward Denham), Kate Ashfield (Mary Parker), Crystal Clarke (Miss Lambe) and Lily Sacofsky (Clara Brereton).

Newcomers include Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Alexander Colbourne, and Tom Weston-Jones as Colonel Francis Lennox – two very different men vying for Charlotte's affection.

Outlander's Alison Heywood will play Charlotte's younger sister Rosie, Normal People's Frank Blake is Captain Declan Fraser, a courageous character (if a little rough around the edges), and Alexander Vlahos takes on the striking and flamboyant Charles Lockhart, a Byronic artist who arrives to paint portraits of Sanditon's fashionable and wealthy residents.

Theo James, who played spurned Charlotte as cad Sidney, previously confirmed that he would not be returning for season two.

"Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to," James said in a statement. "The broken fairy-tale like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique and so interesting to me and I wish the cast and crew every success with future series."

Sanditon season two: The release date

Sanditon season two will premiere on BritBox on 21 March 2022, before returning to ITV.

Sanditon was brought back due to popular demand after it was initially cancelled by ITV. It will launch on BritBox and ITV. Season 3 was also recently announced.
