First look: we take a test run of the brand new R.A.D One V2 trainers
I first stumbled across R.A.D on one of my daily internet deep dives for the best and the brightest in the world of activewear and gym kit.
The UK label first burst onto the scene in 2022 with the launch of its iconic R.A.D One trainer, an all-round training shoe designed for CrossFitters and gymgoers. The brand then expanded into the world of running with the R-1, and now here we are with the latest launch.
Working on a drop system, R.A.D's website releases limited edition versions of the trainers and sell out at the click of a finger, so the much-awaited launch of the V2 is sure to cause a stir.
I was lucky enough to try out the R.A.D One a couple of months ago, and it made its way into one of my top gym trainer picks and has since gone on to become one of my most worn shoes. So when the new launch of the One V2 popped into my inbox and the opportunity to get my paws on a pair came up, I didn't hesitate.
How I tested
I go to the gym most days, mainly focusing on cardio and strength training with a mix of HIIT workouts and more low-impact exercises. For the new V2, I wanted to test how they held up with cardio and not just strength/cross-training workouts, so I made sure to clock in with my daily 10k-step walk.
R.A.D One V2 review
One V2 Cross-Training Shoe
A 5-star rating?! I know what you're thinking, but I don't give these out to just any shoe.
Upon first wear it is clear these shoes are insanely comfy, I have pretty wide feet but these didn't feel like they pinched or hugged too tightly, while still providing all-around foot support.
There are some key changes to the V2 that I was interested in putting to the test. First of all the team has upgraded the SwellFoam midsole to provide further cushioning for longer training sessions, apparently a 33% increase in bio content from the V1 – and as someone who is prioritising cardio at the moment I wanted to see how they performed.
Cushioned comfort
When using the treadmill or stair machine, I definitely feel much more support in the sole and base of my foot compared to a lot of other cross-training or lightweight shoes I've tested out. I even ran my 5k on the treadmill — something I typically can't do without a decent amount of cushioning in my footwear. Compared to the V1, I notice an increase in cushioning in this version, without sacrificing the support and ground feel that are essential for strength training or cross-training.
While I wouldn't pick these over dedicated running trainers if that was my focus, these are a fantastic option for gym goers who just want one shoe that can get them through their daily cardio and really shine when it comes to strength or cross-training.
All about that base
The flat base provides great stability when you're working with weights, allowing your feet to connect with the floor exactly where you need for the right amount of push — but they never feel unsupportive.
The new design focuses on improving both flexibility and durability. While I can’t speak to durability just yet (they’re still new to me), I can definitely say they’re flexible, When switching between different movements — planks, burpees, circuit training, you name it — you want your shoes to move with you. Over a few workouts, I never once felt like they were holding me back or restricting my movement, which I’ve definitely experienced with other trainers. That’s a big tick from me.
Limited-edition looks
In terms of aesthetics, this is a super sleek and streamlined shoe and one of my favourite things about the brand is how they drop limited-edition looks and unique colourways to snap up before they sell out. The V2 is first launching with this classic yet very cool all-white, suede upper with some statement lime and purple around the sole. I can't wait to see the new colours that drop in the future because my hot pink V1s garner so many compliments.
My only critique with the shoes is the suede fabrication featured throughout, when you have a lighter colourway they're just bound to get dirty – even when just worn around the gym. Obviously that's not concern number #1, but when you love a pair of shoes you want to keep them looking good!
Final verdict
If you're a CrossFit enthusiast or a dedicated gym goer with a focus on strength, but want to shop just one shoe that can get you through your whole workout, these are the trainers for you. The V1 became the go-to shoe I reached for at the gym, but the V2 is taking over. For a specialised shoe it's also pretty affordable, coming in at £130.
Overall, super impressed with the improvements made on an already pretty fantastic cross-training shoe and I can't wait to see what comes next from the brand.
The R.A.D One V2 will be available exclusively at rad-global.com from 24 January 2025, retailing at £130.
