The Standard hotel close by King’s Cross station has launched a new rooftop bar, inspired by its New York roots.

Dubbed simply “The Standard Rooftop”, the open-air spot, which is decorated in bright pinks and yellows, sits above the hotel’s 10th floor restaurant, Decimo, the Mexican-inspired dining room run by Peter Sanchez-Iglesias. It has views of much of the city, including an unobstructed sight of the St Pancras clock tower.

Opening on May 1 , initially the astroturfed bar will offer table service only, in line with the first stages of lockdown lifting. Later, in the summer, reservations will not be required, with the hotel promising a “relaxed, festival atmosphere”. Reservations are being taken now.

“The Rooftop is the newest addition to The Standard since opening the hotel two years ago, set to become the crown jewel of the property with its outstanding panoramic views across London,” the Standard’s general manager Elli Jafari said of the opening. “We’ve transformed the space to create a magnificent piece of heaven in King’s Cross, the spot to meet friends this summer for drinks before or after dinner and for long weekend sessions in the sun, and hopefully a welcomed new addition to London’s nightlife scene. We can’t wait to launch the hotel’s next chapter.”

Hot-dogs will be served – either vegan or not – while drinks will include three £11 sun-friendly cocktails on tap; an elderflower collins, a classic Tommy’s margarita given a kick with added chilli, and a rum punch. There will also be wine, spirits and beer available, as well as a few soft drinks.

As the spot will not be covered, opening will be weather dependent but, should the sun stick around, tables will be available from Wednesday to Sunday.
