Everything you need to know about Netflix's Sherlock-inspired show The Irregulars

From Cosmopolitan

Ever wondered what Sherlock's neighbours on Baker Street thought of all his antics? Well, it looks like we're about to find out as Netflix's The Irregulars will follow the inhabitants of 221B Baker Street as they solve a series of mysteries in order to protect London. The Netflix twist? They're a group of "troubled street teens" and they're up against supernatural forces.

What is Netflix's The Irregulars about?

In Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels, the Baker Street Irregulars are an eclectic group of street kids who Sherlock occasionally employs to gain information he wouldn't normally have access to. As for the Netflix series, which is loosely based on the gang, the official synopsis reads:

"Set in Victorian London, the series follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes. As the crimes take on a horrifying supernatural edge and a dark power emerges, it'll be up to the Irregulars to come together to save not only London but the entire world."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Irregulars creator Tom Bidwell revealed the Netflix series will centre pretty much entirely on Conan Doyle's gang. "Our story focuses on the Irregulars, the gang themselves. It's their story, their adventure. Sherlock Holmes is in the story, it's his world, but he's not the central focus. He plays a big part of it, don't get me wrong, but it's about the kids and their journeys."

You can expect The Irregulars to be a pretty big departure from standard Sherlock Holmes adaptations because cases won't just be explained by good old-fashioned logic and deduction - there are also supernatural elements at work. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bidwell also talked about his decision to introduce these elements:

"The supernatural element brings a kind of Victorian horror to the show that's very different to what you'd expect in the Sherlock Holmes novels[...] In our show, the mysteries can be solved, but they can't be very easily explained with rational thought - there's monsters and ghouls and horrors attacking the city of London."

Is there a trailer for The Irregulars?

Yep, and you can watch it above. Be warned, it's pretty dark.

Who will star in Netflix's The Irregulars?

While Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are usually the stars of the show, in The Irregulars their characters will be taking a bit of a back seat. Sherlock will be played by Henry Lloyd-Hughes (who you may recognise from The Inbetweeners, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Anna Karenina) and Dr. Watson will be played by Royce Pierreson (Murdered by my Boyfriend, Line of Duty).

The leader of the Irregulars, Bea, will be played by Thaddea Graham (Curfew, Letter for the King) and her younger sister Jessie by Darci Shaw (Judy, The Bay). The other members of the misfit crew are Billy (played by Jojo Macari), Spike (played by McKell David, and Leopold (Harrison Osterfield).

When will The Irregulars be released on Netflix?
