First look at Margot Robbie as Barbie, 2023 release date confirmed

A first look at Margot Robbie in character as Barbie has been unveiled, and we have a release date too.

The upcoming Barbie movie, which comes from Oscar-nominated Little Women director Greta Gerwig, will see the I, Tonya actress star alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Studio Warner Bros has now revealed that the movie is set to hit the big screen just in time for summer next year on July 21, 2023.

Alongside the actress and Gosling, Barbie has also signed on the likes of Elf's Will Ferrell, Insecure's Issa Rae, Superstore's America Ferrera and Arrested Development's Michael Cera.

Also on board are Sex Education's Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells, Ghostbusters' Kate McKinnon, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings' Simu Liu and And Just Like That's Hari Nef.

That's on top of The OA's Kingsley Ben-Adir, Matilda's Rhea Perlman, The Crown's Emerald Fennell, Dumbo's Sharon Rooney, Grace and Frankie's Scott Evans, Little Women's Ana Cruz Kayne, The Umbrella Academy's Ritu Arya and Stath Lets Flats' Jamie Demetriou.

Gerwig is directing, and has co-written the script with real-life partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story).

While concrete details on Barbie remain under wraps, Robbie spoke last year to British Vogue about playing the character.

"It comes with a lot of baggage!" she said. "And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.

"People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be', and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'"

Barbie will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
