First look at Joanna Lumley's new comedy role in Motherland

A first look at Joanna Lumley's upcoming role in comedy Motherland has just been released - and we can't wait for the series to return.

Series three of the cult BBC Two classic (created by Catastrophe's Sharon Horgan) about navigating the nightmares of parenthood and the peril of school gate cliques returns later this Spring. In an inspired bit of casting, it's been announced that Joanna will play the 'poisonous mother' to the insufferable but iconic Amanda (played by Lucy Punch).

As well as Amanda and her mother, the brilliant bunch comprised of Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin), Liz (Diane Morgan), Kevin (Paul Ready), Meg (Tanya Moodie), and Anne (Philippa Dunne) all return. This time around there's a nit pandemic, a school trip and Mothers Day, which sets the scene for the unveiling of Joanna in her guest role.

"I have played Lucy’s mother before, in the film Ella Enchanted: so it was a special treat to pitch up again as another fairly poisonous parent in Motherland," says Joanna of the role. "Although I was only in for a day it was the greatest fun to be with that dangerously talented cast."

We can't wait to see Anna Maxwell Martin be back in her role as a frustrated parent in Motherland soon; it's quite the contrast to her Line of Duty character DCS Patricia Carmichael!

Motherland is back on BBC Two later this Spring
