A brand new portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been revealed and it is the first official painting of the royal couple.

The painting was released today (23 June) and features a full-length image of Prince William and Kate standing together with an arm round one another as they look off to one side.

Prince William wears a smart suit and tie with his other hand in his pocket. Kate wears a stunning, shiny emerald dress by The Vampire’s Wife which she has been seen in on other occasions. (You can find the £1,595 dress here).

At her shoulder, Kate wears a pearl and diamond brooch known as the Cambridge brooch, in a subtle reference to the couple’s titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The historic brooch originally belonged to a Duchess of Cambridge who was born in 1797. It was eventually passed down to the Queen from her grandmother, Queen Mary, who wore it during Prince Charles’ christening.

The heirloom brooch will have been given to Kate by the Queen for the occasion and is a perfect choice for the first official portrait of the Cambridges.

While individual portraits of members of the Royal Family are common, this is the first joint painting of the Cambridges. A special portrait was released in honour of Kate's 40th birthday earlier this year, while a series of portraits of the Queen have also been released in celebration of milestone birthdays and her Platinum Jubilee.
