While winter comes with its magical holiday moments, it also brings the dreaded deep cold that requires me to whip out my heaviest puffer coats. While most of the styles I own do a great job of keeping me warm, they also cover up the cute winter outfits I have on underneath. This year, for trips to Wisconsin and Colorado, I looked for a piece that was both stylish and functional.
After closely watching (and shopping) Walmart’s exclusive clothing drops all year, I wasn’t surprised to find this exact combo in the latest Free Assembly drop. The moment I saw the plaid pattern on the brand’s puffer jacket, I knew I needed the piece for my winter wardrobe. Plus, it has a similar look to fall’s trendy barn jackets but with a winter spin. I had the chance to try the coat in the dark navy and green pattern, but it also comes in a red plaid and all-white, which are both perfect for holiday styling.

I’ve styled the plaid jacket with leggings and jeans for morning walks with my dog, giving an otherwise casual outfit an elevated upgrade. It’s also been my go-to for dinners out, and I’ve been wearing it over pieces like skirts and dresses. The holiday colors of the puffer make it a perfect way to incorporate a festive motif into my wardrobe, but it’s subtle enough to be worn all season long, too. I love that instead of hiding my cute looks, the coat brings them together.
This jacket hits right at my hips and has an adjustable, drawcord waist, which I prefer for my petite frame. The body of the puffer coat is slightly oversized, so I can still wear my heaviest sweaters underneath without feeling bulky and uncomfortable. Since I currently live in Los Angeles, where the temperatures get chilly but not too cold, I have been able to wear this to outdoor events and dinners. But I know that when layered over heavier pieces, it will be a great jacket to rely on even when I visit family in Denver.
Shoppers agree that this jacket is both a cozy and stylish piece for winter. One person called the puffer well-made and added that they get lots of compliments on it. After just a couple weeks of wearing it, I agree that people constantly comment on how cute this coat is and ask where it’s from.
If past collections from Walmart are any indication, this Free Assembly winter drop won’t be in stock for long. Snag my new favorite jacket as a last-minute holiday gift or as a piece to style to holiday events this year. Shop more coats at Walmart below.
