'Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It's kind of long but full of suspense.'

The first trailer for the highly anticipated Zola has arrived, teasing a wild and twisted saga that's almost too unhinged to believe. Adapted from A'Ziah 'Zola' King's viral Twitter thread from 2015, the adventure follows the titular character, a Detroit waitress played by Taylour Paige, and the shenanigans that ensue after she befriends a customer, Stefani, played by Riley Keough. Stefani convinces Zola to join her for a weekend of partying in Florida, but their plans go awry, to say the least.

'What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of 'hoeism' rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp (Colman Domingo), an idiot boyfriend (Nicholas Braun), some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale,' part of the official logline teases.

The feature was directed by Janicza Bravo (Lemon, Dear White People), who also penned the script with Slave Play writer Jeremy O. Harris. 'I hadn't really experienced a story like that, I would say ever in my life,' Bravo told Deadline of working on the project.

The film was warmly welcomed when it made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last January. After more than a year of waiting, Zola will ride into theatres this summer. (A24 previously announced that it will debut on June 30.)
