From Town & Country

The New York-based visual artist Sarah Coleman has collaborated with Fendi to reimagine its iconic Peekaboo bag for a limited series, coinciding with this year’s Design Miami.

In partnership with the brand’s creative director Silvia Venturini Fendi (who conceptualised the Peekaboo’s original design), Coleman has created three pieces: a glow-in-the-dark nappa version with the Fendi logo embroidered in phosphorescent beads; another in the brand’s signature yellow hue; and a canvas iteration adorned with mulitcoloured thread.

Coleman is one in a long line of women artists to have collaborated with the Rome-based brand for the Florida city’s design fair, with previous partnerships including those with Chiara Andreatti, Sabine Marcelis, Cristina Celestino and Kueng Caputo.

In addition, the Italian fashion house has commissioned Coleman to entirely revamp the interior of its Miami Design District boutique. For this, the artist has created an optical-print façade, altering the brand’s logo and pequin emblem with a vertigo effect.

Known for playfully manipulating designer materials to transform everyday objects, Coleman leveraged fabrics from Fendi handbags to reupholster the store’s furniture, collaging a zig-zag chair with pages from old books, magazines and imagery from the brand’s archive.

Coleman has also produced a one-of-a-kind canvas Peekaboo handbag to go on display in the Miami boutique. Emblazoned with kaleidoscopic paint and plaster, its bold colours are inspired by the city’s vibrant art scene.

Fendi and Sarah Coleman’s limited-edition Peekaboo ISeeU bags will launch exclusively at the Fendi Miami Design District boutique on 27 November.
