If You’re Fed Up Of Your Leftover Avocado Going Brown, This Tip Is For You

·2-min read

Picture the scene: it’s Sunday morning. The sun wakes you up from a perfect slumber. You roll over to see that it’s brunch o’clock and you’ve just remembered you have half an avocado in the fridge; all ready for you to whip up avocado toast for yourself.

You go to the fridge, but OHMYGOD, what is this lump of brown smoosh? Why, it’s the half avocado you were so looking forward to spreading on toast and topping with a perfectly poached egg.

Looks like it’s the dusty dregs of that box of cereal for you, friend…

But things could have been so different if only you’d used this hack to stop your leftover avocado going brown.

This super-simple tip for stopping your avocado going brown was provided by @mamainthekitchen, who shared a video on TikTok of her rubbing her avocado half in olive oil. Yup, that’s it – to stop your avocado going brown, all you have to do is rub olive oil on it, which you almost definitely already have in your cupboard.

So how does this wizardry work? Well, according to @mamainthekitchen, the oil stops oxidisation, which is what makes the avocado go brown.

God, we love science.

We’ve also heard that if you wrap your leftover avocado in a lettuce leaf, that will have the same effect; leaving you with fresh, green avocado.

Alongside a photo on Facebook of half an avocado, that had been in her fridge for a whole week, Cherry Gaddes wrote: “I sort of accidentally discovered that I have been throwing away first-class food wrap.

“Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make for excellent food wrap. They’re designed for that purpose in the first place.

“This avo was cut a week ago, and stored in the fridge ever since, wrapped in lettuce leaf. All good for today’s breakfast. Incidentally, Lettuce leaves even keep buns fresh!”

So, there you have it – not one, but TWO genius hacks for stopping your avocado going brown. You’re welcome.
