Fashion journalist Caryn Franklin on the importance of social media
Caryn Franklin advocates the use of social media

There's a heavy emphasis on social media this year at the Clothes Show Live, more so than I have seen in years past. Every stall is advertising their Pinterest account name or their Twitter handle. It is no longer all about 'Like us on Facebook'. You'll find companies self-promoting on various channels from podcasts to blogs and all in between. There is also a Twitter Alley where you can hang out, spend some time tweeting and find out the Twitter handles of all of the business people and celebrities present.

Fashion journalist Caryn Franklin has been a huge advocate for social media every time she appears on stage. From introducing Styled to Rock winner Zainab Vandu-Chikolo and songstress-turned-businesswoman VV Brown, Caryn announced to the crowd each time: "You are the future generation. You have the power to make things happen and get your voice out there. You know more than we do." She also encouraged people to spread the message of her new venture All Walks Beyond the Catwalk which promotes that basic idea that every person is unique and the fashion industry needs to embrace the beautiful differences between each and every one of us regardless of age, colour or size.

When hairdresser Lee Stafford brought his team to the stage to show the latest looks that you can do at home, he also emphasized the importance of these new mediums. His Hair Growth Treatment went wild on social media or 'all that twittering and bloggering and stuff' as he so eloquently put it. He openly admitted that he owes the overwhelming success of the product to the power of social networking.

Many self-made business ventures now heavily rely on social media as their number one marketing tool. It is incredibly powerful. Caryn Franklin also added that if you want to be a fashion journalist, a blogger, a designer or a stylist, you need to be online every day and putting yourself out there. It's great advice. Go and tweet it now.
