Our Fashion Editor's secret weapon for party dressing might surprise you
Tights – they’re not exactly the sexiest of fashion garments, are they? From bad memories of 400 denier wool (so thick they were almost trousers) from school years, to the less-than-glamorous ‘tights dance’, wrestling to hoist them up practically around the chest in the hope of preventing a mid-day saggy gusset. It’s fair to say, I’ve not been the biggest fan, however, with the practically Baltic weather conditions that come with a typical British winter, tights make getting dressed a whole lot easier (and my legs infinitely warmer), so this time I’m determined to get on board, especially for party season.
In fact, I've come across many sources of inspiration in my search for ways to wear hosiery that go far beyond simple practicalities. They can be a great and effortless (minus the tights dance) way to bring a whole new perspective on your winter wardrobe, especially partywear. The right pair will make an outfit feel more curated whether you go statement-making with a bold colour, or timelessly chic in sheer 15 denier black.
As the woman who was mocked for wearing (in hindsight, a very questionable) pair of aubergine colour tights ONCE in her early teens, I swore I’d never pick up anything more vibrant than simple black ever again. That said, the colour blocking trend (matching the shade of your tights to your party dress and shoes) might just lure me into breaking my own self-imposed rule. The tights equivalent of 'go big or go home', this isn’t going to be for everyone, but for those willing to take the risk lies the reward of a sensational party outfit.
A flash of a bright colour like red with cream, mauve and caramel is a winning combination for daytime too that can be achieved with tights or socks for a contemporary ‘fashion’ edge, without being too imposing under a knit dress or long skirt.
As a recent hosiery convert, glitter or embellished tights feel like the logical next step on from my loyal black 15 denier, especially for the festive season. I love how they add an unexpected element of fun and whimsy under black tuxedo trousers; the perfect addition if your cocktail outfit is missing a little something. Or, if you just want to breathe new life into a favourite party dress, this subtle style is the perfect way to change up a repeat ensemble at a minimal cost.
Cream, or just lace tights in general, might be the closest style to your granny’s hosiery drawer, but don’t be deterred. Not only are the thicker wool options incredibly warm (your legs will thank you), they bring an elegant edge to cocktail dresses and only enhance the ladylike glamour of a faux fur coat and OTT crystal jewellery.
