Our Fashion Editor on the party earrings that get her compliments

Cocktail earrings are, without hesitation, my one non-negotiable in any party outfit for the simple (and a little vain) reason that they never fail to garner lots of attention whenever I wear them. Over the years I've realised this small but mighty finishing touch is guaranteed to result in instant compliments (and who doesn't like that?). While for some people it’s a red lip, smoky eye or certain party dress that brings a festive ‘dazzle’, I've found that a globular-esque earring can enhance all the above, as well as hold its own as the answer to achieving the perfect done-undone look.

We’re forever looking for ways to make the most of our wardrobes (especially the seasonal-restrictive parts like a party piece), so when it comes to saving time, effort and money, amongst other sustainability-related reasons, the devil is in the detail. Elements such as tights and a statement pair of earrings refresh old classics or bring a whole new perspective to other items that don't get as much love.

Making an amazing pair of earrings your outfit hero is the perfect excuse for keeping the rest of your festive look subtle – a black or cream tux jacket is instantly elevated with sculptural pearl earrings and a chunky cuff, while ‘jeans and a nice top’ feels less cliché with an unexpected asymmetric pair and minimal dewy face makeup with a seasonal hint of frosty blush.

Some of my tried and trusted showstopper earrings include of-the-moment brands like Completedworks, and Pearl Octopuss.y for creative designs that have friends and strangers alike frantically taking down the name (as a fashion editor, I want everyone to have that 'Where are they from?!' moment). However, if you're looking for a more affordable pair, the high street also do great versions. My number one rule when choosing new earrings? Don’t play it safe; the bigger the better (and the more compliments). Pavé crystals, asymmetric sets, gold, pearls, ribbons and beads; anything goes.
