Fashion designer Issey Miyake dies
Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake has died at the age of 84.
Representatives for the style icon issued a short statement on Tuesday revealing that Miyake had passed away on 5 August following a battle with liver cancer. It is believed a funeral has already taken place.
Miyake was born in Hiroshima in 1938 and witnessed the atomic bombing in August 1945.
After studying graphic design, he travelled to Paris, where he worked for the likes of Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy, and lived in New York, where he apprenticed for Geoffrey Beene.
Upon his return to Tokyo in 1970, Miyake founded the Miyake Design Studio, and quickly built up a reputation for his use of pleating in designs, which led to the development of his famous Pleats, Please collection.
Over the course of his career, the designer also launched a popular fragrance line, which included L'eau d'Issey, and produced hundreds of black turtleneck tops for Apple's Steve Jobs.
