Luxury retailer Farfetch has launched an online sustainability calculator that will help customers to understand how their shopping decisions will impact the planet.

When choosing a purchase, shoppers can learn about which materials reduce the environmental impact of what they’re buying, as well as being able to see the benefits of incorporating pre-owned pieces into their wardrobes.

Farfetch has also released a report that investigated the average environmental impacts (of carbon, water and waste) for certain items – and the green savings made when opting for pre-owned. On average, one pre-owned purchase can save 1kg of waste, 3,040 litres of water and 22kg of CO2, compared with a new item.

Giorgio Belloli, the chief commercial and sustainability officer at Farfetch, explained: “With this research, we want to support our partners and more broadly the luxury industry, in helping to drive positive change.”

Farfetch has been selling a curated selection of pre-owned and vintage online since 2010 and last year it launched a service where its customers could sell or donate pre-owned items.

It is not the only luxury retailer to put sustainability higher up on its agenda in recent years. Net-a-Porter, Matches Fashion and Browns have all added curated sustainability sections onto their online shops, while the likes of Liberty and Selfridges have teamed up with wardrobe rental companies to encourage their customers to consider borrowing, rather than buying.
