According to the show's synopsis, the series is set eight years after the original Gossip Girl website went dark. "A new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl," the synopsis says, "the series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years."
Given how iconic OG Gossip Girl was, it's unsurprising that the reboot attracted some *major* attention from both fans of the original series and a new generation of watchers. But after seeing the first episode, viewers had some pretty mixed opinions about the show.
"Based off of episode 1 #gossipgirl is definitely going to be deemed one of the best teen shows of our generation. The characters, setting, and atmosphere blend in a way that perfectly sets up room for a story that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. Cant wait to see more. xoxo" tweeted one viewer.
Another added, "As someone who was a die hard fan of the original @gossipgirl show…let me just say, the reboot is THAT BITCH and she knows she is…. XOXO."
"Ok wow the Gossip Girl reboot pilot was much much better than I expected. They didn’t hold back with the tea I was so stressed and on the edge of my seat. Finally a reboot of a show that’s actually good," said a third viewer.
On the other side of things, one viewer said: "Not really that excited for the Gossip Girl reboot, everyone knows that no one will ever beat Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf... biggest icon ever."
"The #GossipGirl reboot makes me sad. I don't want them to replace the OGs I have too much of an emotional attachment to them," said another.
One viewer in particular wasn't a fan of the reboot, they tweeted: "Watched Ep1 of the #gossipgirlreboot. I hate every character. The acting sucks. I feel like I need to watch the original GG to detox my eyes from how terrible that episode was. This is an insult to the awesomeness that was the original."

The series will air in the UK on BBC later this year.
