Netflix's Bridgerton has been watched by more than 82 million accounts in its first month, making the period drama the service's biggest series ever, the streaming platform revealed last Thursday. And so it's hardly surprising that the internet is awash with predictions and theories for the second series (with filming for this now confirmed to kick off in the spring).
Though the show is adapted from the Julia Quinn romance novels, parts of the series one plot deviated from the original narrative (for example, Baron Featherington's death does not happen in the books), leading fans to believe that there might be further differences in the next instalments.
Fans of the Bridgerton novels will already know that Colin and Penelope (played by Derry Girls actor, Nicola Coughlan) only get together in book four, but according to a new fan theory from Reddit, we could witness the union even sooner.
Reddit user Not-Dry-Toast posits that the Colin and Penelope relationship will be fast-tracked, maybe even to next season, explaining: 'The more I think about it, the more I just can’t see [Netflix] dragging out the romances for Anthony, Benedict, Colin, etc. etc. throughout season after season.'
And the thread, which has garnered lots of attention online, continued: 'It doesn’t seem like their M.O. [modus operandi] to make all these different seasons of a show, even if it is an extremely popular show.'
'People keep saying, for instance, that they can’t wait until season four for Colin to finally get together with Penelope. And to be honest, I really can’t see them stretching that plot line out that long because they tend to cut shows off early.'
And the fan theory even goes so far as to suggest how this romance might take place. They propose the mysterious heir to the Featherington estate (after Baron Featherington was killed in season one) will be a 'very removed relative.' This person may very well 'want to marry off the Featherington daughters as soon as possible to get them off his back.'
Why is this relevant you ask? Well, the thought-process is that this 'threat' of marriage, will 'speed up the process' of Colin confessing his feelings to Penelope.
Could we be in for another Bridgerton wedding? We'll have to wait until the ton's social season is once again upon us to find out.
