It's two days since season 4 of The Crown dropped on Netflix, and so far it's proving popular. Ranking as the number 1 most watched show in the UK on the streaming platform at current, fans have eagerly tuned in to watch the development - and subsequent demise - of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship play out on screen.

And there's lots to dine out on; from the incredibly real-life-like costumes, to the curious debate about why Charles and Diana's wedding day was hardly shown, we'll be talking about The Crown for weeks to come, I suspect. But one other thing the eagle-eyed fans watching the drama have spotted is a woman that looks suspiciously like Kate Middleton in the background of one of the scenes.

Say what?

In episode 6 of the new series, Terra Nullius, new parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana embark upon a tour of Australia. In one of the scenes a crowd cheers them on, and one of the extras - dressed in a yellow cardigan, with long brown hair blowing in the wind - looks so much like the couple's daughter-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, it'll make you do a double take. See?

Compare it to this photo of Kate Middleton taken in 2011, wearing a yellow dress with her hair being blown about in the breeze, and you'll really notice the likeness.

Over on Twitter, one woman described the "meta moment" of spotting the lookalike extra in the background of the scene, while another fan posted: "Surely SURELY I'm not the only one who has definitely (read: probably not, but definitely) spotted Kate Middleton in the background in Season 4 of The Crown."

Sadly for anyone who was already riding high at the thought of Kate Middleton making a covert cameo in the Netflix series, it's almost certainly not her. We know, thanks to a letter written in September 2019 by the Queen’s communications secretary Donal McCabe, that the royal family has nothing to do with The Crown (I quote: "the royal household is not complicit in interpretations made by the programme"), so it would be pretty unlikely the Duchess would get the seal of approval to star in the show herself.

Oh, and then there's the fact that in the same scene shot from a different angle, 'Kate' doesn't look much like Kate at all.

Nope, not her.

Well, it was a fun theory while it lasted...
