How a familiar street scene looked 70 years ago
Plenty has changed in this picture since it was taken but the scene will be immediately recognisable to many readers.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we take a look back to how a well-known junction in Watford looked around 70 years ago.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This scene along St Albans Road looks away from Watford and is at the junction of Harebreaks (to the left) and Balmoral Road (to the right). For people who know this part of Watford it is very recognisable. This view is from a postcard with a postmark of 1953.
“At this date, both corners on the left side were undeveloped. The Verulam pub, now replaced by a block of flats, was not been built until the late 1950s and the car park we know today was the roadway.”
Watford Museum is open Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
