Face Masks Are Fashion’s ‘It’ New Accessory (Here’s Hoping They Won’t Go Mainstream)

This season of Fashion Week, there was one accessory spotted practically everywhere that proved very hard to ignore. No, we’re not talking about the cutesy pom pom sock trend or the novelty bag, this one’s a tad more sinister - and far less appealing.

We’re referring, of course, to the face mask. Unsurprisingly, the odd catwalk addition has been raising an eyebrow or two around the world - and even more bizarrely, it doesn’t look like it was a passing fad.

Most recently, a series of face masks took to the runway at designer Nguyen Cong Tri’s show at Tokyo Fashion Week. The knitted headgear was debuted in a number of different styles, from half to full face designs. However, these are probably one of the more elegant takes on the creepy trend.

Gareth Pugh’s use of masks in his latest AW16 collection at London Fashion Week was pretty terrifying. He seemed to draw inspiration from cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, which could give anyone nightmares.

But it gets odder. Yes, really.

Another London Fashion Week designer, AF Vandervorst, fashioned masks out of colourful belts, leaving the poor models just a small eye hole to peek out of.

At New York Fashion Week, the masks got jazzy as knitted masks were covered with gold embellishments at Laurel DeWitt’s show.

It’s a miracle that these models didn’t break their ankles as we’ve no clue how they managed to see out of them.

Lastly, Vivian Westwood joined the mask parade at her Paris Fashion Week show with the addition of a lot of sequins and mesh.
