Fab Five: UK hotels with vegetarian restaurants

You'd be hard-pressed in the UK these days to find a restaurant, hotel or otherwise, that didn't offer at least one vegetarian option. But 'you won't perish' is hardly the most inspiring of menu mantras for non meat-eaters - least of all when you're on holiday.

So, to celebrate National Vegetarian Week, we've rounded up five fab UK hotels for herbivores, where you can enjoy activities like vegan cookery classes and feast on hearty veggie breakfasts and dinners with a wealth of choices - not a bland mushroom risotto in sight.

1. The luxury London hotel where you can have a raw vegan afternoon tea

Lancrigg, Grasmere, Cumbria

Lancrigg, Cumbria
Lancrigg was also popular with the romantic Lakes poets including Wordsworth, De Quincy and Coleridge

Lancrigg lies in the Cumbrian village of Grasmere, popular with walkers owing to its Lake District location - and proof that it's not just meaty protein that'll get you up those mountains. Its restaurant is open all day to the general public as well as guests, and a takeover by a dynamic young chef has seen the menu take a turn for the rather inspired.

For more information, visit Lancrigg's website or read our guide to the best hotels in the Lake District.

2. The b&b where even the paint is eco-friendly

La Suite West, London

Come expecting a raw, vegan menu and you won't be disappointed. Come expecting lots of hearty meat dishes and wine – the hotel is alcohol-free – and you likely will be. The menu consists of a selection of small plates – orange and kale salad and raw "bread" with hummus – and mains such as courgette pasta with cashew nut cheese. A vegan afternoon tea with glass of non-alcoholic fizz is also served.
