With many of us spending our summer holiday in the UK this year, we've all become reacquainted with the good old British roadtrip.

Think: sandwiches from Marks & Spencer at the service station, a footwell full of crisp packets, squabbling over the radio and singing our hearts out to cheesy 80's classic; and somehow, they've been some of the best parts of our travels.

And the best bit about a roadtrip? The rugged coastlines, crumbling castles and wild greenery that we see along the way.

The question is, which destinations are the most beautiful?

Interested in finding the most stunning destinations that can be visited by car, Click4reg Private Plates surveyed 1,200 travel Instagrammers to discover which areas of the UK they would most like to visit or have already visited — because if anyone has a nose for gorgeous scenery, it's a social media pro.

And though you might think it must be the quaint, honey-hued villages of the Cotswolds that came in at number one, it's actually a little village in Wales that came up trumps.

Portmeirion Village looks more like a destination in Italy than in the UK with its enchanting, colour-washed buildings and there's a very good reason for that: it was built to resemble one.

Nestled in Gwynedd in North Wales, this picturesque destination was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village, and is now owned by a charitable trust.

And the roadtrip to get there is equally as picturesque: think coastal views as far as the eye can see.

In short, it's the ideal place to soak up real holiday vibes and explore Italian architecture without ever having to leave the UK.

Coming in at number two is Polperro in Cornwall, with its narrow streets, quaint cottages and the stunning Harbour Entrance building perched a top of a mountain.

Polperro is a large village, civil parish, and fishing harbour within the Polperro Heritage Coastline in south Cornwall.

Undoubtedly one of Cornwall's prettiest places, Polperro sits nestled in a cliff ravine and is so charming it is worth a visit any time of year.

So, if you're looking for the beauty to start before you get out of the car, add these destinations to your staycation list.
