A dermatologist has warned of the dangers of showering too frequently in response to Dwayne Johnson revealing he showers three times a day.
The action man recently revealed to a Twitter user that his daily routine includes three showers, with him tweeting, "Shower (cold) when I roll outta bed to get my day rollin'. Shower (warm) after my workout before work. Shower (hot) after I get home from work (sic)."
While some fans may be tempted to follow Johnson's routine, Dr Derrick Phillips, Consultant Dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic, has warned that showering that often could be bad for your skin.
"Showering is an integral part of most people's daily routine. In addition to helping wake people up, addressing body odour concerns, it helps to reinforce a sense of cleanliness," he said. "However, use of shower gels and soaps does have a disruptive effect on the skin barrier and can lead to increased water loss and in turn, dryness. This can be particularly problematic for those with impaired skin barrier function such as those with eczema or sensitive skin. Over-showering is therefore not without its risks."
Washing removes healthy oil and bacteria from the skin so bathing too frequently could make it become dry and itchy. Some dermatologists recommend only showering every other day or two to three times a week, but this also depends on how often you exercise.
Johnson shared his shower regime after a number of celebrities - such as Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Jake Gyllenhaal - revealed they didn't necessarily wash themselves or their children every day.
Commenting on the risks of only washing as and when it's required, Dr Ross Perry from Cosmedics Skin Clinics warned, "Personal hygiene is down to the individual and daily washing is common. Washing ad hoc increases the risk of body odour and possibly fungal infections due to a natural build-up of skin fungus from sweat."
