AN ISLE of Wight man going through a difficult patch in his life stole bottles of prosecco from Tesco.

Leszek Berezniak, 32, of Grove Road, Sandown, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, March 28, and admitted theft.

Prosecutor, Tom Corke, told the court Berezniak stole two bottles of prosecco from Tesco Express in Lake on February 13.

He said staff had been alerted to a man who left the store without paying and when police caught up to Berezniak, one of the bottles was recovered.

Michael McGoldrick, defending, said Berezniak originated from Poland and had been living in the UK for 11 years.

He said he was going through a difficult patch in his life, having lost his job, and alcohol had become an issue for him.

Mr McGoldrick said Berezniak pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and was aware it would be an expensive bottle of prosecco for him.

He was fined £40 and ordered to pay £8 compensation, costs of £40 and a £16 surcharge.
