The world of menswear is drowning in overstuffed collections. Turns out, sadly, that you can have too much of a good thing – especially with a 'small' edit of 232 pieces. And while the legion releases, re-releases and re-re-releases are noble in their efforts to help men dress better, it's overwhelming. Mr P has done the opposite with its latest drop: a tightly curated, fine-tuned line-up designed for this season, and the next, and the one after that.
Blessed be: stuff that goes the distance. As the in-house label of luxury retailer Mr Porter, the eponymous line has cemented itself as a go-to for wardrobe fillers that pose all the good bits of top tier brands (good craftsmanship, fabrics that are really nice to touch etc), but without the statement such brands can often use to define themselves. The result is classic menswear that works in tandem, and in partnership with your shouty clothes. The A/W '20 collection is no different.
That means solid pieces cut in clean silhouettes: monochrome cashmere sweaters, and Goodyear-welted boots, and knitted polo shirts that nail tricky smart-casual dress codes. A particular highlight however comes in a Napa leather blouson. It's Italian-made, and an easier gateway to the world of leather jackets which, wrongly, is still seen as an advanced-level sport.
The brand is in a fortunate position. With its parent label privy to the wants and needs and insights of the thousands of men who shop there, Mr P can inform its own collections accordingly. It can (and does) create clothes that most guys want to wear. That includes us.
Available from mrporter.com today, priced from £65
