The Met Office has placed yellow weather warnings across Scotland and the rest of the UK as the country prepares for Storm Éowyn, the fifth storm of the meteorological year.

The yellow warnings have been set for strong winds all day on Friday (January 24) and up to 3pm on Saturday (January 25). The latest storm that is heading toward Britain, fuelled by a powerful Atlantic jet stream intensified by North America’s recent cold snap.

West Dunbartonshire is bracing for powerful winds as Storm Éowyn sweeps across the entire country and ales could surge to a staggering 90mph, bringing disruptive conditions to the region, reports the Mirror. Ahead of this week's weather chaos, a yellow weather warning for rush hour fog is in force for Dumfries and Galloway till 11am on Wednesday (January 22).

Speaking for Friday's outlook, Meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "Winds across the central part of the country, Northern Ireland, southern and central parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern England could reach 70-80mph.

"Wind warnings have been issued for most of the country. There will be some heavy rain associated with it as well, preceded by snow, particularly across Central and Northern areas of Scotland before it all clears away."

The 'danger to life' warning from the national forecaster is urging those in affected areas that risk accidents from flying debris, waves and beach material to stay vigilant. Damage to homes and buildings is also possible, in addition to falling powerlines.

Weather maps issued by meteorological service Ventusky reveal that Storm Éowyn is set to strike the UK by 8am on Friday, after sweeping across Ireland. Wind speeds are forecast to range between 80mph and 90mph, with the north Wales coastline, including Anglesey, among the first areas to feel its force.

The East Lothian coastline, stretching from the English border to Edinburgh, will face relentless gales throughout Friday afternoon, according to the weather maps.

Writing on its website, the Met Office adds: "Storm Éowyn is expected to pass close to or across the northwest of the UK on Friday before clearing to the northeast on Saturday.

"Whilst there is some uncertainty in the track of Éowyn, a spell of very strong winds is likely, initially southeasterly before turning westerly, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph inland and 80-90 mph along some coasts and hills (perhaps even higher in a few locations)."

All of Friday’s weather warnings, issued for wind, are set to expire at midnight. However, a new warning has been issued for Saturday, again focused on strong winds, covering all of Scotland until 3 p.m. The alert details risks of "longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected"

The Met Office has reported that strong west to northwesterly winds will continue into the early hours of Saturday as Storm Éowyn moves northeast. Gusts are expected to reach 50-60 mph inland and 60-70 mph along exposed coasts and hills. There is also a slight chance of 70-80 mph gusts hitting the Northern Isles briefly before clearing by later that day.
