ICYMI, the first season aired on ITV in 2019 and the story is based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel of the same name. The eight-part series, which is set in the early 1800s, followed Charlotte Heywood, a young woman from the countryside who moves to Sanditon – an up and coming seaside town.
Series one ended with quite the heartbreaking finale, so what can we expect from the second instalment? Here's everything we know about Sanditon season two so far...
Is there a trailer for Sanditon season two?
There isn't a trailer for the new series just yet, but the first teaser pictures were released in December 2021 showing some of the new cast in action:
What's the plot of Sanditon season two?
In a press release announcing that production had started, ITV said the second season picks up nine months after the events of the first season's finale.
It said: "Charlotte returns to the beautiful seaside resort and soon attracts the attention of not one, but two new men. And, in her last summer season before turning 21, Georgiana Lambe, keen to forge her own identity, gets up to mischief in the name of love… but will she run the risk of being lonelier than ever before?
"The Parkers are back, as Tom strives to rebuild Sanditon. But there are many unforeseen issues awaiting him, while the secrets and lies of the dysfunctional Denhams continue to rock the foundations of the sunny seaside town. The Army arrives to make Sanditon their new base and with them bring potential new romances, friendships and challenges for the residents."
Meanwhile, show star Rose Williams recently shared some pretty key info on the upcoming second series, along with a few details about the third season. Not bad for a show that was in danger of cancellation, eh?
Williams shared that the cast and crew is "almost finished shooting Season 2," adding, "We have two more weeks. And then, we'll start on Season 3. I'm very much back in the world of Sanditon, and grateful to be there."
The actor also responded to the rumours that her character will have multiple love interests in the new series.
"I’m not sure how much I can say," she told Collider. "I can say that Charlotte comes into her own, in a new way. There will be characters that you know and love, but there are new ones that are definitely introduced.
"I’m working with this lovely actress called Rosie Graham, who plays my sister, so that’s lovely to explore," she continued. "Jane Austen, herself, had a younger sister called Cassandra, and in my imagination, I wanted to bring that influence of Jane and Cassandra to Charlotte and Alison. It’s nice to explore that sister relationship. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait and see when it comes out."
Who will star in Sanditon season two?
Rose Williams (The Power, Medici) returns as the show's heroine, Charlotte Heywood. Also returning for the second season are Crystal Clarke as Georgiana Lambe (Black Mirror) and Kris Marshall (Love Actually) as Tom Parker.
New cast members include Rosie Graham (Outlander) as Charlotte's younger sister Alison, and Maxim Ays as the handsome Captain William Carter. Other newcomers to the show are Frank Blake (Normal People) as Captain Declan Fraser, and Alexander Vlahos (Versailles) as Charles Lockhart.
Ben Lloyd-Hughes will play Alexander Colbourne, a thoughtful, cerebral and antisocial man, while Flora Mitchell will play his daughter Leo Colbourne and Eloise Webb as his niece, Augusta Markham.
When will Sanditon season two be released?
Britbox UK announced in December that the series will premiere on Monday 21 March 2022, shortly after being broadcast in the US. The Jane Austen inspired drama from Red Planet Pictures will premiere on Sunday 20 March 2022 at 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS in the US and will also air on ITV later next year in the UK.
