‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Delayed, Cast Allowed to ‘Pursue Other Opportunities’

Fans of “Euphoria” will have to wait even longer for a third season.

Season 3 has been plagued with all sorts of false starts. Last we officially heard, in May 2023, HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi said the third season was expected to air in 2025. However, a new statement from the network announced that production has been delayed.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” a representative for HBO told IndieWire. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

“Euphoria” marked breakout roles for Zendaya (who has won two Emmy Awards for her portrayal of teen drug addict Rue), Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Dominic Fike, Barbie Ferreira, Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo, and the late Angus Cloud, who died in 2023. Season 2 concluded in February 2022. Sweeney recently told MTV at SXSW that she was “going into ‘Euphoria'” production next.

Levinson shared with Elle that the third season will be “film noir” style centered on Zendaya’s Rue as she “explores what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.” The show is expected to have a time jump, taking the characters out of high school. Zendaya is also slated to direct an episode in Season 3.

Series costume designer Heidi Bivens said during an April Vogue interview that the third season was conceived of being set five years after the events of Season 2. At this rate, that might happen on the real calendar too. “There is talk of it being approximately five years in the future,” Bivens said, “and that they’re not in high school anymore. Dorothy’s not in Kansas anymore.”

In January 2024, HBO’s Casey Bloys said Levinson was writing Season 3. At the time, production was expected to begin in Summer 2024.

Since debuting in June 2019, “Euphoria” has landed 25 Emmy nominations and nine Emmy wins.
