Erdem has teamed up with size-inclusive brand Universal Standard as part of the designer's ongoing commitment to making his label accessible to all. The collaboration features five denim pieces, available in UK sizes four – 36.
A boiler suit, three pairs of jeans, a denim skirt, a dress and shirts come printed in Erdem's signature floral motif, ideal for the sudden arrival of spring. All styles are also available in fuss-free white, which the designer described as "fresh and modern". Prices are much lower than his ready-to-wear line and range between $120 (£87) - $198 (£144).
Erdem recently extended the size range to include UK six to UK 22, which prompted discussions with US brand Universal Standard, who have long been praised for democratising fashion. "I admired what they did and was keen to continue the conversation on inclusivity," the designer tells us. "The industry has been so slow to adapt to inclusive sizing. And, although I do think that there’s been a positive shift in fashion celebrating different shapes and sizes much more than there has been in the past, so much more needs to be done."
Universal Standard co-founder and CEO Alexandra Waldman says that the collaboration represent another positive step in pushing through the boundaries of fashion to create an industry that is open to all women regardless of size.
“We want the industry to keep witnessing that size equality is the only way forward,” explains Waldman. “Access for all doesn’t end with US. Together with Erdem, we aim to change the way fashion looks for all of US and the way we look at fashion. This is to the benefit of the industry, the consumer, and the idea of fashion equality.”
Erdem said there was no difference in how he designed for plus-size women. "It’s the same approach; cutting something beautifully and making sure it works perfectly is important for any size," he says.
The Erdem for Universal Standard is available now exclusively at universalstandard.com.
