Elsewhere, Kate Winslet won Leading actress in a limited series for Mare of Easttown, and Ewan McGregor won Leading Actor for his role in Netflix's Halston, playing the title role as the late designer.

Actress and writer Michaela Coel won Writing for a limited series for her acclaimed drama I May Destroy You, making history in the process as the first Black woman to win in that category.

"Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn't comfortable," Coel said in her acceptance speech. "Visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success. Do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence. I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault."

Meanwhile, fans will be hoping that Winslet's win for Mare of Easttown - co-stars Evan peters and Julianne Nicholson also won acting awards for their performances in the gripping drama - might push the show's creator Brad Ingelsby to confirm a second season.

Speaking backstage at the event, the actress told press (including Deadline): "Conversations are happening, but I think until scripts are in place that we can really respond to, and know what a full story of a Season 2 might be and where Mare goes.

"We're not going to match what we already did, nor should we try, but we should do at least provide something that’s as captivating and entertaining as Season 1."
