Emma Watson Looks So Powerful Delivering Another Moving U.N. Speech

President Obama’s final address to the United Nations General Assembly might have been the biggest draw of the international conference, but Emma Watson was in attendance as well and delivered yet another another empowering speech. A feminist advocate who has addressed millennial issues on multiple occasions, she took the opportunity to discuss the equality and safety of women on college campuses on behalf of HeForShe.

“As we leave home for the first time to study at the places that we have worked so hard to get, we must not see or experience double standards. We need to see equal respect, leadership, and pay,” Watson said. “The university experience must tell women that their brain power is valued, and not just that — that they belong within the leadership of the university itself.”

Watson used her speech to put pressure on universities to “make it clear that the safety of women, minorities, and anyone who may be vulnerable is a right, not a privilege” because “when one person’s safety is violated, everyone feels their own safety is violated.”

She pointed out that “a university should be a place of refuge that takes action against all forms of violence.” Unfortunately, it has become clear that that’s not the case as more and more sexual assault charges on campuses have been brought up over the past few years, and more and more have been dismissed. After a basketball player was accused of rape at two different universities, he received a scholarship for basketball at a third. Earlier this year Twitter user @RapedAtSpelman accused the prestigious women’s school Spelman College of victim blaming and failing to adequately and swiftly address her assault, which occurred on the Atlanta campus. And others chimed in.

Unfortunately, the list goes on and on; a recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that 18.6 percent of college women are the victims of rape or attempted rape by the end of their freshman year. Something needs to be done, and Watson is fine being the one to take action.

“We believe that students should leave university believing in, striving for, and expecting societies of true equality … in every sense, and that universities have the power to be a vital catalyst for that change,” Watson said.

While we were enthralled by her speech, we also noticed how grown up she looked (we’re into fashion; we can’t help it). Our favorite little wizard looked like a powerful woman in a bespoke, fully sustainable outfit that Zady designed for her. She’s been on a sustainable-clothing kick for quite some time, opting for an eco-friendly Met Gala outfit in 2016, with pants made entirely out of plastic bottles.

Tuesday’s look consisted of a black, loose turtleneck and a khaki knee-length pencil skirt with a slit. Her black Proenza Schouler shoes had a chunky kitten heel and a bow wrapped around her ankle, tied at the front.

If her speech doesn’t convince you that she knows what she’s doing, her in-charge outfit definitely will.
