Emma Thompson encouraged Greg Wise to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing

Greg Wise has revealed his wife Emma Thompson convinced him to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing.

The British actor, who has been in a relationship with his Sense and Sensibility co-star since 1995, revealed to MailOnline that the Cruella actress encouraged him to say yes to the dancing competition when he was approached.

"I told my dear lady wife when they asked me and I said no and she said, 'You're mad you've got to do it!'" he recalled, before revealing that they've postponed a holiday so he can take part in the show.

"She's been filming solidly since January and she finishes her last film tomorrow. We were going to have her first holiday together in seven years, but over the five-minute conversation the autumn was kicked into the grass and she's thrilled she'll be able to relax and support me."

Greg previously revealed that he was inspired to sign up to the show in honour of his late sister Clare, who was a massive Strictly fan.

"I was asked and I thought, 'No absolutely I can't do it,' and then I thought about it, and almost exactly five years after my sister died we'll be doing our first routines," the 55-year-old shared. "My sister was a real disco diva, she was the dancer in the family and she left this world in a glitterball coffin, so as this world is all glittery I have to go it for her."

The launch episode, in which Greg will discover his professional dance partner, will air on Saturday.

BBC officials have confirmed that a professional dancer has tested positive for Covid-19 and will be forced to isolate for 10 days. However, they insisted the result "didn't affect recording of the launch show". They have not revealed the dancer's identity, and their famous partner has tested negative.
