An intriguing first teaser for Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo's new movie Poor Things has been released.

The movie, which sees Oscar-winner Stone reunite with The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos, focuses on a young woman called Bella Baxter, who is brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist called Dr Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).

The brief teaser sees Bella – formerly known as Victoria Blessington – awoken as we get a taste of the mysterious steampunk-like world around her.

The clip also teases the wider cast, which includes Ramy's Ramy Youssef and The Carmichael Show's Jerrod Carmichael, as well as an excellently-timed "ow!" by Ruffalo's lawyer character Duncan Wedderburn after being slapped in the face.

"I am finding being alive fascinating," Bella declares at one point.

Bella's former life as Victoria saw her drown herself in order to escape her abusive husband, with Godwin bringing her back to life by implanting the brain of the foetus she was carrying at the time.

She becomes eager to learn more about the world around her, and as she is free from the prejudices of the times, Bella becomes committed to her beliefs in equality and liberation.

Poor Things has been adapted for the screen by The Favourite co-writer Tony McNamara from the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, which itself has echoes of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

The cast also includes Sanctuary stars Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley, Andor's Kathryn Hunter, as well as Suzy Bemba and Wayne Brett.

Poor Things is set to be released in cinemas on September 8.
