Emma D’Arcy on being nominated for Best Actress as a non-binary person

House of the Dragon – and Negroni Sbagliato – icon Emma D'Arcy has had an honest conversation about gender identity and awards ceremonies.

Speaking on the Golden Globe's red carpet on Sunday, the non-binary celebrity branded their Best Actress nomination as "ironic", telling E! News: "It's kind of a surreal thing because when I was starting out, I really felt that I had to pretend, to present as a woman in order to find success in this industry."

They went on, "Anyway, it wasn't sustainable, and I stopped pretending, and weirdly, it's at that point that I got nominated for best actress at the Golden Globes. Which is beautifully ironic. I think the most important thing is that it implies that the space for trans people and gender-nonconforming people is getting bigger all the time. So, I feel very privileged."

But, this isn't the first time that the HOTD star has opened up about being non-binary in the TV world. "This is the first job in which I’ve brought my non-binary identity to work," Emma told Interview in October 2022. "And part of that was because HBO asked me what pronouns I use, and I thought a lot about whether this was the right time."

Emma continued: "The reason it’s important is that there was a point, earlier in my career, where I really worried that it wasn’t possible to be an actor if you aren’t a cisgendered person."

"Typically, within casting sites, there are two columns, and I wondered if those two identities were going to have to live separately in order for me to have a career," they added. "The reason I decided to be honest in my presentation professionally is that I really hope that younger people who want to do this work know that there is absolutely space and that space is opening up."
