Emma Corrin will be entering the world of aristocracy again after playing Princess Diana in The Crown, by taking on the lead in Netflix's female-focused adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

The classic novel by D.H. Lawrence follows the scandalous affair between star-crossed lovers, as the privileged Lady Chatterley – suffering in an unhappy marriage – engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate.

It was originally published in Italy and France in the 1920s, having been banned in the US until 1959 due to the explicit sexual content and terminology.

Jack O'Connell will star opposite Corrin as Oliver Mellors, while Matthew Duckett will play Sir Clifford Chatterley.

Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose directing credits include The Mustang and Cate Blanchett's Mrs America, will helm the film, adapted from D.H. Lawrence's novel by Academy Award nominee David Magee.

Here's everything else we know about the film so far...

Lady Chatterley’s Lover: The plot

Based on D.H. Lawrence's infamous novel of the same title, the story follows Constance Reid (Lady Chatterely) as she embarks on an affair with her estate gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. Constance is in an unhappy marriage with upper-class Baronet Sir Clifford Chatterley, who has been paralysed from the waist down during combat in World War I.

When Constance realises that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.

The book caused controversy upon its release in the late 1920s due to its explicit descriptions of sex and then-unprintable four-letter words.

The book has been adapted for TV and the big screen many times before, most recently by Line of Duty and Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio for the BBC, which starred Holliday Grainger, Richard Madden and James Norton.

Netflix's latest adaptation will offer a female-focused retelling, with female director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre on board.
