Eminem, Demi Lovato, and Zac Efron are some of the celebrities who have inspired us with their stories of sobriety

Fresh off his Coachella performances in April, Eminem shared that he’s been clean for a decade on Instagram. The rapper posted a photo of his AA medallion to commemorate the big achievement. He captioned the shot: “Celebrated my 10 years.”

Eminem has talked about his addiction, revealing that it had gotten so bad that he was taking up to 20 pills a day. “I used to get pills wherever I could,” he told the New York Times in 2011. “I was just taking anything that anybody was giving to me.” A near-death experience, from an accidental overdose in 2007, led him to check into rehab a year later.

Demi Lovato has also been vocal about her struggles with addiction. In March, she celebrated six years without drugs and alcohol. “Just officially turned 6 years sober,” Lovato wrote on Twitter. “So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible.”

The 25-year-old singer has admitted that her drinking and partying started when she was 17 and escalated during her Disney Channel days. She’s received treatment for a bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm, and substance abuse.

In 2013, another Disney star checked into rehab. Zac Efron, who starred in the High School Musical franchise, battled drugs and alcohol. He credits exercise for keeping him on track and sober. “When I’m very careful about my fitness and have a goal in mind, it keeps me motivated and balanced.”

Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin started 2018 with a huge accomplishment. Matlin, who also appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2008, celebrated 31 years of sobriety. The deaf actress shared a picture of herself on Twitter holding her chip and added the caption: “Ending my day, so grateful that today, I am celebrating exactly 31 years of sobriety.”

Matlin previously battled drug and alcohol abuse, and was in rehab when she found out about her Oscar nomination for the 1986 movie, Children of a Lesser God.
