Singer Ellie Goulding has opened up about why she and husband Caspar Jopling often live apart, revealing it can be good for their relationship to have some space.

The couple, who tied the knot with a lavish ceremony 11 months ago, had been isolating in Oxfordshire together during lockdown, but Ellie, 33, has since moved back to London. Caspar, 28, has stayed behind to complete his Master of Business Arts degree (MBA) at Oxford University.

Speaking to The Mirror, Ellie said she loves spending time alone, because it allows her to totally focus on herself. "I love it! I love my husband – but I also love myself," she explained.

"I can read a book. I can go for a run, I can eat messily. So it’s really great that you can have a partner that you don’t have to be with 24/7 – even when you’re married."

To be fair, if we had two houses, we'd probably spend some time alone at one of them too.

On her husband's romantic tendencies, Ellie continued, "He built me a cover for my cat litter tray. And he always buys me flowers. I was driving down the motorway in my electric car and I found a little rose in the glovebox."

The singer also opened up about whether she and art-dealer Caspar were hoping to start a family any time soon, adding, "I want to have kids but it’s not the be all and end all. I am so happy right now and I want to have kids later but it’s not encouraged to wait."

Ellie and Caspar tied the knot at York Minster Cathedral last September, with the singer wearing aVictorian-inspired Chloe wedding dress. Sharing pictures of the day on Instagram at the time, she wrote, "This weekend I married the love of my life, in God’s own country, surrounded by the people I cherish.

"Overwhelmed with gratitude. Thank you eternally to everyone involved in such a special time, including every single person that traveled from far and wide to come and celebrate with us at York Minster - a place that my husband and his family hold close to their hearts. I will never forget your support and generosity. We both send you all so much love and a massive hug xx"
