Johansson has launched legal proceedings against the movie studio giant over the release of her Avengers break-out movie. In the suit, Johansson claims her contract was breached when Disney released Black Widow on Disney+ (premier access) at the same time as its theatrical release. The suit claims Johansson's contract for the movie stipulated that her salary would be tied to the film's box office performance.
Disney have responded saying there is 'no merit' to the legal filing, stating: 'Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.'
Asked about the lawsuit, from the perspective of being concerned about the effect of Covid-19 on cinemas and cinematic releases, while in conversation with Jason Sudeikis for Vanity Fair, Olsen conveyed her reaction to the news.
'I think she’s so tough and literally when I read that I was like, “good for you Scarlett,"' the WandaVision star said.
Sudeikis agreed: 'Well, I mean, it is appropriately bad-ass and on brand.'
Olsen said that while she wasn't 'worried on Scarlett's behalf' she too shares concerns about the future of movie releases, and is particularly 'worried about small movies getting the opportunity to be seen in theatres'.
'That was already a thing pre-COVID. I like going to the movies and I don’t necessarily want to see only an Oscar contender or a blockbuster. I would like to see art films and art house theatres. And so I do worry about that, and people having to keep these theatres alive... But when it comes to actors and their earnings, I mean, that’s just, that’s just all contracts. So it’s either in the contract or it’s not.'
Olsen and Johansson are both female actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Olsen portraying Wanda Maximoff - who stars in several of the Avengers movies as well as her own breakout series on Disney + with on-screen husband Vision (Paul Bettany).
Johansson is best known in the superhero sphere for her role as Natalia Romanoff aka Black Widow in the movies and her first breakout film - also starring Florence Pugh and David Harbour - which released this year after being delayed due to the pandemic.
